If you’re reading this you’ve probably already devoured scores of articles on setting goals the “right” way, making your life more manageable, eating the elephant or frog or other random species that works for this metaphor… I’m here to tell you to do something radical, something every fiber of your being will rebel against doing. Be SMART. Yes I know we’ve all heard about setting “SMART” goals that are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely. But I’m going to challenge you to skip that step for now because it tends to lead us down a cold, clinical, rabbit hole and we forget to add the most important part: Heart. If it only seems logical, but you’re not passionate about it you’ll never smash those goals the way you want. So lets be SMART with our goals and Stop…Muse….Assess…Realize…Target. It’s just that simple.
Stop– Do not run full steam ahead with what seems like a logical plan on paper. Is it really logical for YOU?
Muse– Think about what you really want to get out of this goal. Meditate on it. Picture what it will be like if you follow that logical plan someone else has suggested to you. Where are you in a day? A week? 6 months from now?
Assess– Now that you know what you’ve discovered the potential holes and pitfalls in your logical plan, assess how you can tweak it to better meet your lifestyle, personality, and general needs.
Realize– Accept the fact that it will never go as planned, but that you will still realize your dreams if you…
Target– Stay on target. Constantly remind yourself of your BFW (Big Fat Why), the real reason you want to accomplish this goal. 99.999999% of the time that BFW has nothing to do with logic and everything to do with heart.
